Checking Your Tyre Tread

Worn tyres are not good. If a tyre lacks tread then the contact between it and the road surface is reduced, resulting in less grip.

If all four tyres have little grip due to low treads, then it is an accident waiting to happen. Not only that, if you’re caught with an illegal tread depth you could face a hefty £2,500 fine and three penalty points. If all four tyres are below the legal limit you could face losing your driving licence as well as an eye watering £10,000 fine.

So, what is the minimum tyre tread depth? In the UK and Europe, it is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and this must be all the way around the tyre circumference. The easiest way to check this is by using a 20 pence piece. Simply slot it into the main tyre tread groove and if the outer band of the 20 pence piece is obscured then your tread is above the legal limit. If the outer band is visible, then the tread depth is too low and the tyre should be replaced immediately.

How to use a Tyre Repair Kit

Most cars sold today come with a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel. Some people may find the thought of having to use one quite daunting but they are very simple to use. They are also much cleaner and quicker to use than changing a wheel.

So, let’s talk about using a tyre repair kit. You’ll find it in the usual place - under the boot floor. Most sealants are pressurised so you’ll only need to remove the cap and then connect the bottle to the valve on the tyre. Then connect the compressor to the accessory socket, switch it on and leave it for no more than ten minutes. You’ll then see the tyre inflate before your very eyes.

You’ll then need to drive around for a couple miles so the sealant can spread around the tyre. Then head to our Burrows Mazda centre in and we’ll get the tyre replaced for you by one of our manufacturer trained Technicians.
