Toyota takes the next step in its world-leading self-charging hybrid technology with the introduction of a new Hybrid AWD-i electric all-wheel drive system for the new Prius.
Additional styling, technology and performance improvements have been made to the world's most popular self-charging hybrid car and was revealed to the world at the Los Angeles Auto Show (November 28th 2018). The new Prius will make its first European appearance at the Brussels Motor Show (January 18th 2019) where more information will be revealed.
The Prius has been a leader since its launch back in 1997 in technical innovation, progress in efficiency, refinements and driving pleasure within its four generations. The 2019 Prius will be the first Toyota model to benefit from Hybrid AWD-i. This is a new, intelligent electric all-wheel drive system that provides a more sure-footed handling and peace-of-mind driving.
The AWD-i also features a new nickel-metal hydride hybrid battery which is designed to cope well in cold conditions. The rear wheels are driven by a second electric motor on the back axle. It's permanently active at speeds under 7mph, while it can assist the front wheels if low-grip conditions are detected between 7mph and 44mph.
The exterior styling on the front and the rear of the new Toyota Prius gives the model a cleaner and sleeker look. The new slim and sharp headlight units feature a new bi-beam LED lighting that produces a wider field of illumination. There will also be two new strong body colours to choose from: Emotional Red and Aqua Breeze. Not only that, there will be a new 17-inch alloy wheel design and a new contrast dark grey finish for the 15-inch wheelcaps.
Inside the 2019 Prius, the quality of the cabin has been enhanced with small but noticeable changes to the centre console and on the instrument panel. To create a smarter and refined interior, new cloth upholstery finishes have been introduced. Revisions to the equipment specifications have been made which include: an larger wireless charging tray for smartphones, turn-by-turn navigation directions added to the head-up display functionality and a multimedia Toyota Touch 2 touchscreen that offers a faster response and can be operated using 'pinch and flick' gestures familiar from smartphone use.
