From April 1st 2018 all new diesel cars will go up a VED band (Vehicle Excise Duty - better known as road/ car tax) if they fail to meet the latest Euro 6 standards.
The car tax rules changed back in April 2017 making CO2 emissions targets stricter. The current tax scheme is based on the CO2 emissions your vehicle produces. Currently if your car emits an average of 0 gkm of CO2 every kilometer it drives it is exempt from car tax.
Here are new car tax bands as of April 2017 compared to the new rates set to be introduced as of April 2018 for diesel drivers:
