The theft of catalytic converters has grown immensely over the past years thanks to the significant rise in the price of some precious metals inside the devices, which are used to clean exhaust gases and reduce pollution.
Toyota are doing their bit to combat the rise in catalytic converter thefts as they join forces with Police to create a National Database of Catalytic Converters. It will be operated by the Centre for Infrastructure and Asset Protection (CIAP) and the method of registration is to mark the catalytic converter with a uniquely formulated SmartWater® solution which Is linked on the database to a specific vehicle.
The special SmartWater® solution is simply painted on to the catalytic converter of your Toyota and SmartWater® scientists can identify which vehicle it came from enabling the police to prosecute thieves.

You can also have a Catloc device fitted to help protect both the front and rear catalyst against theft opportunity. A Catloc is manufactured from marine grade stainless steel for strength and durability, anti-tamper fixings and a unique marking kit (Catloc ISR Kit) that chemically etches a unique serial number into the Catalysts, which is registered on the International Security Register.
Sadly not. It can make theft more difficult but thieves are using high-powered cutting tools to remove catalytic converters and because of this it is not possible to make catalytic converters ‘unstealable’. A Catloc makes it harder to steal a catalytic converter, slowing thieves down and acting as a deterrent.
Catloc devices are available for a growing proportion of the Toyota model range, but not all. We recommend speaking to your local Burrows Toyota dealership.
