The Mazda MX-30 R-EV is a plug-in hybrid that retains the core values of the pure electric Mazda MX-30 while introducing new ways to use a battery electric vehicle. Equipped with a 17.8 kWh battery, the R-EV offers a 53-mile pure electric range. Utilising Mazda’s unique rotary engine technology, the 830cc single-rotor petrol engine acts as a generator, enabling longer drives without range or charging anxiety. With no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels, the rotary unit purely generates electricity, ensuring the MX-30 R-EV always operates via the electric motor for a seamless EV driving experience.
Mazda, with over half a century of expertise in rotary engines, selected this powerplant for its ability to deliver high output from a small, lightweight and easily packaged unit. The rotary engine is placed alongside the generator and high-output motor in the engine bay. The combination of the 17.8 kWh battery and a 50-litre fuel tank creates a unique series plug-in hybrid with a flexible total range of over 400 miles, while a WLTP CO2 output of just 21g/km ensures class-leading environmental performance.
The MX-30 R-EV supports both AC and rapid DC charging. Three-phase AC charging takes around 50 minutes, while DC rapid charging can be completed in approximately 25 minutes, offering maximum flexibility. The vehicle has three drive modes to suit different situations: Normal, EV, and Charge. With a 125 kW/170 ps output, it delivers better acceleration performance than the 145 ps fully electric MX-30.
In Normal mode, the car uses electric drive as long as the battery has charge. If more power is needed than the battery can provide, such as during acceleration, the rotary engine generator activates to supply additional power. EV mode ensures the vehicle runs on electric power exclusively until the battery is drained. However, if the accelerator is pressed significantly, the rotary engine will kick in to provide extra power for strong acceleration.
Charge mode allows drivers to reserve a specific amount of battery charge for zero-emission driving in urban environments. Drivers can set the reserve level in increments of 10%. When the battery drops below this level, the generator charges it back up to the set level and maintains it. Once the battery is above the reserve level, the car operates in Normal mode until the battery depletes to the reserve level again, at which point the rotary engine generator keeps the battery at the specified level.
